Try streaming videos on Kanopy this month

Alloway Library is pleased to announce a special, limited-time trial of an on-demand video streaming service starting now until  February 15.

Kanopy is used by over 1,500 educational institutions providing 12 million students and faculty with access to more than 26,000 films each year.  It provides access to one of the largest collections of films in the world – including award-winning documentaries, training films and theatrical releases – on every topic imaginable.

Just like Netflix, Kanopy provides a dedicated and customizable website for users to watch films any time, any where, on any device, but Netflix Canada has a library of about 4,400 titles compared to the 26,000 in Kanopy. Kanopy works directly with filmmakers and film distribution companies to offer award-winning collections including titles from PBS, BBC, Criterion Collection, Media Education Foundation and more.

TWU students and employees can access all of Kanopy's collection during the trial period.  There is no charge for viewing any of the material during the trial period.

Kanopy's unique patron-driven acquisition model ensures institutions only pay for the films their students and faculty actually watch. If  Alloway Library purchases a subscription to Kanopy - based on input from our users -  the library pays only pay for the films our users actually “trigger.” (To trigger a film, it must be played 4 times within a 12-month period). If no films are triggered,  there's nothing to pay because there are no other associated fees.  If a film is purchased, it becomes part of the library's collection for a year and is available for unlimited viewing.
The layout is visually compelling through its use of beautiful stills spotlighting feature films, as well as its visual browsing below, which features pop-up synopses. After creating a personal account through one's institutional subscription, individual users can create their own clips and playlists and embed them into Moodle or Blackboard course pages. Arlis/NA
