Flannery O'Connor's "People" on DVD

Good Country People is an adaptation of Flannery O’Connor’s short story about "a sullen 36 year-old with a wooden leg and a PhD” who who thinks she will seduce a young Bible salesman. Of the handful of films adapted from her short stories this is "the most successfully humorous. This one falls clearly into the comic grotesque tradition of middle-Georgia humor, whose structure exploits the surprise ending format to its full comic dimensions, profaning the sacred in order to ridicule hypocrisy." (Jane Elizabeth Archer)
