Cuts at Library and Archives Canada

OTTAWA, May 2, 2012 - Recent cuts to staff and programming at Library and Archives Canada (LAC) will have devastating effects on our nation's ability to acquire and preserve its history.

"These cuts will further undermine the capacity of Library and Archives Canada to fulfill its legislated mandate to acquire, preserve and make accessible Canada's history."

On April 30, LAC presented 450 members of its staff with affected notices, with 215 of those positions to be eliminated.

The announced cuts include:

* the elimination of 21 of the 61 archivists and archival assistants that deal with non-governmental records,
* the reduction of digitization and circulation staff by 50%,
* a significant reduction in the number of staff that deal with preservation and conservation of documents,
* the closure of the interlibrary loans unit.

The National Archival Development Program (NADP), which supports programming at provincial, regional and university archives across Canada, will also be eliminated. Many of these are the small, local archives were to be part of LAC's new distributed Pan-Canadian Documentary Heritage Network.As a result of the NADP cut, the Canadian Council of Archives office will be closed in Ottawa and many summer work projects already planned across the country will be cancelled.

By celebrating this Day throughout the world, UNESCO seeks to promote reading, publishing and the protection of intellectual property through copyright.
23 April is a symbolic date for world literature, since 23 April 1616 was the date of death of Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. 23 April is also the date of birth or death of other prominent authors such as Maurice Druon, K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and Manuel Mejía Vallejo.

Translation is the first step towards the rapprochement of peoples, and is also a decentralizing experience, teaching diversity and dialogue. Translation is one of the driving principles of our creative diversity, which enriches each language through contact with all the others.

Message for World Book and Copyright Day 2012

This is why UNESCO chose this date to pay a worldwide tribute to books and their authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and to gain a renewed respect for the extraordinary contributions of those who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity.
The idea for this celebration originated in Catalonia (Spain) where it has become a tradition to give a rose as a gift for each book purchased.
The success of the World Book and Copyright Day will depend primarily on the support received from all parties concerned: authors, publishers, teachers, librarians, public and private institutions, humanitarian NGOs and the mass media

New Cambridge Companions to Philosophy, Religion and Culture Online now available

March 2012: Latest Companions Update

As part of the March 2012 Companions update, two titles have been added to the Companions to Philosophy, Religion and Culture bringing the total number of volumes to 162. 

The new additions are as follows:

• The Cambridge Companion to Existentialism, Edited by Steven Crowell
• The Cambridge Companion to Religious Studies, Edited by Robert A. Orsi

What's new

Latest online update: March 2012

In the March update we revise some 'linguistic colossi’, including time (with 607 terms in 110 entries), blood (with 440 lexical items in 106 entries), and gas (with 363 lexical items in 130 entries).

 

The latest revision also sees updates to modes of transport, which are significant indicators of social and lexical change, along with other subjects including health, education, and business.

The OED publishes four updates a year. The next update will be added to the dictionary in June 2012.
